Pitivi's startup time
So, since it seems everybody’s been talking about startup time these days, I’ll admit I tend to secretly obsess over that too. Well, it’s not so secret given that I’ve blogged about profiling work on Specto and PiTiVi before… anyway. I believe you should provide your developers with the fastest computers to do the development,…

Improving GNOME PackageKit on big screens
In the same vein as my don’t make me scroll post, I sent a couple of patches Richardwards to, among other things, solve one of the biggest itches I had with gpk: the fact that I had to care about sizing it up constantly on my 1920×1200 24″ monitor. Before, if you started gpk-application (or the…

Results from the hackfest
I had a fantastic week at the PiTiVi+GES hackfest and desktop summit in Berlin. Over the course of the past few days, we polished and merged some more features and bug fixes in your favorite video editor. Lubosz’s “transformation” branch has now been merged and allows insanely sexy and efficient panning/resizing/cropping of your video clips,…

Various performance and usability improvements in PiTiVi
I have been attending the Desktop Summit since the opening on Saturday, and it’s been a great experience reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new ones. Tomorrow, the PiTiVi and GES hackfest officially begins, in room “1.308/2” (the building is at 24 Dorotheen Straße). Come join us at any time of the day (and since…

I really want to show icons
Okay, so GNOME/GTK+ doesn’t show icons on buttons anymore unless they are part of a toolbar or you specifically request that they show up. The problem is that because of this, PiTiVi’s play/pause button would end up not showing anything at all. Thus, back then Alessandro inserted this piece of code to force displaying icons on all buttons…

Don't make me scroll
Let me tell you about a small usability improvement in Pitivi that might provide some inspiration to others. See, I hate scrolling. Unless it’s absolutely necessary and the dialog is bigger than my screen’s height or you expect to tile windows vertically, as an application developer you should avoid scrolling when possible. 2024 edit: a…

Specto 0.4 released
I’ve been holding off a Specto release for way too long. See my previous post on the matter for some insights into why Specto 0.4 was released after Duke Nukem Forever. This development hell streak ends today. If there are still people out there using this piece of software, go grab the new tarball. Distro…

Searching your Media Library
Although my changes were implemented back in December, I had to wait until they were merged today to blog about them: searching the Media Library is now possible in PiTiVi git, which is a feature I wanted for a long time (it makes it much easier to deal with large amounts of footage in a…

Reorganizing the wiki
Since there doesn’t seem to be much demand for video tutorials on “how to contribute to PiTiVi”, I have been thinking about how to reorganize the wiki. Indeed, a comment on my previous blog post made me realize how hopelessly messy our documentation for new contributors was. I pictured myself as a stranger to the…

Boom! Headshot!
